Mahjong 101

Learn to Play! Curious about Mahjong but not sure where to begin? Mahjong 101 is designed for brand-new players who want to learn the game in a relaxed, fun, and easy-to-understand way. We’ll start from the very beginning—learning the tiles, understanding the NMJL card, setting up the game, the Charleston, calling tiles, Jokers, exposures, and how to put it all together to play a complete game. You do not need any experience, and you don’t need to memorize everything before you start playing. That’s what the lesson is for! Come ready to learn, ask questions, laugh a little, and discover why so many of us finish a game saying… “One more game!” 🀄️

Mahjong 102

Take Your Game to the Next Level! You know how to play—now it’s time to learn how to play with more strategy and confidence. Mahjong 102 is for players who understand the basics but want help making better decisions at the table. We’ll work on reading the NMJL card more efficiently, choosing a direction for your hand, recognizing when it’s time to pivot, using the Charleston strategically, and paying attention to what’s happening around the table. We’ll also talk about defense, exposures, discards, Jokers, singles and pairs, and reading the other players’ hands—because good Mahjong is about much more than what’s sitting on your own rack. Bring your questions, your card, and everything that has made you say, “What should I have done?” It’s time to stop simply playing your tiles and start thinking your way through the game.

Reading the Card

A Mahjong Strategy Workshop — In Person or Virtual You know how to play Mahjong. Now you want to look at your tiles and feel more confident answering the question: “What hand should I play?” Reading the Card is a focused strategy workshop designed for players who already understand the basics of American Mahjong but want to become more comfortable navigating the NMJL card. We’ll work through real racks together and practice identifying possible hands, comparing different sections of the card, recognizing strong starting combinations, and finding pivot opportunities when the hand you originally chose just isn’t coming together. We’ll also talk about singles and pairs, flexibility, the Charleston, and how to avoid locking yourself into a hand too early. This is not a beginner lesson and we won’t spend time reviewing how to play the game. The entire class is devoted to the part so many players find challenging: reading the card and deciding where to go with your tiles. Available in person or virtually.
